Once again I arrived at work today and was told that if anyone called about their network account being locked out I was to check with my boss before re-enabling it for them. That sentence alone was both good and bad news. It first told me there were going to be more people let go, but it also told me that since I was being informed, I was not on their list of cuts.
Once again, today my company made the hard decision to reduce it's workforce, this time at our manufacturing locations rather than the corporate headquarters where I work. Once again today, on more than one occasion, I was reminded of why I work with computers rather than in a human resource capacity. I was reminded how lucky I am to have a job at all, though there are days I wonder if it would be all that bad to find a new one, but that is a different blog all together.
Once again today, as the news made its way around the office I did my best to withhold judgment for the decisions being made, and to remember that they are simply doing what they feel is in my best interest. Yes MY best interest as a current employee who is still hopeful that we can endure the current state of the economy without cutting many more jobs. I know that some decisions are easy, removing redundancy and employees who have long since served their purpose but never moved on to something else. However, I am well aware that most of those decisions do not come easily nor are they handled lightly. Plain and simple, in an effort to slim the business for current market conditions, they are adding to the unemployment numbers in locations that already see high numbers from businesses trying to do the same thing. It's tough, no question about it; but I still get to go to work tomorrow!
