Lesson learned: They put zippers on jacket pockets for a reason, so items inside those pockets done fall out when you lease expect it.
Last night it was sunny, warm, and only slightly windy so I ventured out on the bike for a nice ride. I put on my black sweatshirt and dropped both the garage door opener and my cell phone into the front pouch pocket. Since I was going off alone the garage door opener was taken along so I did not have to leave it up while I was out and the cell was in case something happened. I figured that my pocket was deep enough and since it was in front would be the less risky place to stash these important items. Wrong!
I had been out riding for at least a half hour when I discovered that only one of the items was still in my pocket. When I came to the next intersection I frantically searched all my pockets to be sure that I hadn't placed the missing item someplace and forgot about it. It was not in any of them. I had lost my cell phone! I immediately headed home, looking along the shoulder of the road as I rode in hopes of finding it by some stroke of luck, and pulled into the garage. I once again checked my pockets for the missing cell phone and once again came up empty.
Deciding there was still a chance I could find it along the side of the path I had traveled I grabbed the keys to my car, told Jen what had happened and that I was going to go look for it, and headed out to the haystack to find my missing needle. After about 15 minutes of driving along the path I had traveled and finding nothing I returned home defeated and convinced that I would have to spend another $100 to replace the now missing phone and go through the hassle of shutting off the original one with the carrier.
I pulled into the driveway and was greeted at the door by Jen telling me she found it. I was a little confused as she tossed me car keys and told me she had called the phone and someone answered. Apparently an honest and very nice man found the phone along the curb and stopped to pick it up. I presume he was hoping someone would call looking for it but it is possible that he was hoping no one would and he would have gotten a new phone for himself. When Jen called he told her he had picked it up and that he would be more than happy to meet her up at the BP gas station to return it to her. We were off! the gas station is just down the road from our house and we were there within moments. Sure enough a white car pulled up along side the blazer, which Jen had told him to look for, and out stepped a young man with my in tact cell phone. I thanked him, asked where he had found it at, and offered a reward. He refused, smiled, and climbed back into his car.
Apparently there are decent and honest people left in the world. I would have done the same thing for a total stranger knowing that cell phones are important, expensive, and often contain personal information these days. It's nice to know that others feel the same way I do and actually practice what they preach to their children.
